Dr. Perdue is in charge of Geriatrics at the Craven County Hospital and chairman of the Social Services Commission for Craven County. Her talk centered on the new lifeline system available from the hospital to any home in Craven County. She introduced Ms. Edna Rowlett and .Ms. Irene Jarman, who are currently working with the hospital auxiliary who is in charge of maintaining records and placing the lifelines into the homes. The two demonstrated the unit to the Rotary members. They explained the installation cost would run about $60, and the rental fee is $16 per month. Anyone desiring to have this direct connection from their home to the Craven County -jjjCmergency Room should contact either of these ladies at the ^Iraven County Hospital. Mrs. Lela Barrow and Mrs. Carrie Lee Me Vicker have a Lifeline in their homes. Garner Heads Up Vanceboro Team Former football coach of Conley High School will pilota newly formed softball team this summer. The team will be sponsored by John ■ Garris Logging Company of Vanceboro. The team met recently in Kinston for a supper meeting to get organized and purchase uniforms for the upcoming season. Coach Garner’s goal is to steer his team to the World Softball Tournament. He says he has the players to make the goal a reality and he is ready to get the season underway. Boy Scouts Celebrate 74th The 74th Anniversary of Scouting is being celebrated by area scouts during this week Feb. 6 to Feb. 11. Boy Scout Troop 68 & Cub Pack 68 kicked off the celebration by attending the Epworth United Methodist Church to hear Jay Gaskins, Second Class Scout, bring the morning message. The scouts assisting in the service were: Eagle Scout Stacy Lee, Eagle Scout Doug Lee, First Class Scouts Keith Morris and Allen Thomas. On Monday, the Scouts wore their uniforms to school to show the community that scouting is alive in Craven County and to further celebrate the anniversary. Friday night at 7:00 p.m. the week’s celebration will come to an end with the Blue and Gold Banquet at Farm Life Elementary School cafeteria. This will be a covered-dish banquet. At this banquet awards will be presented to both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. All scout parents, scout committee men, scouts, cubs, and friends are invited to attend the banquet. Reid Seeks Re-election David E. Reid, Jr., of Greenville, Senior Resident Superior Court Judge of the Third Judicial District, announced Jan. 31, 1984, that he will seek re-election to the post he has filled since being appointed to the newly-created Third District Judgeship by Governor Hunt in 1977. Reid was elected, without opposi tion, in 1978 to the remaining six years of the term. A strong advocate for protecting the rights of victims of crime, Reid in 1982 appointed a Victim’s Advocate in his courts. The Victim’s Advocate is a probation officer who contacts crime victims and assists them in securing compensation for loss and serves as a spokesman for the victim at the time the criminal is sentenced. Through Reid’s efforts, several other superior court judges in North Carolina have established Victim’s Advocates in their courts. A native of Asheville, Reid David E. Reid, Jr. obtained his undergraduate and law degrees at UNC- Chapel Hill. After serving as Law Clerk to N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice J. Wallace Winborn in 1969, Reid entered and the general practice of law in Greenville in 1960. He served as City Attorney for the City of Greenville from 1966- 1970. Reid was a partner in the law firm of Mattox & Reid from 1974 until his appoint ment as judge in 1977. Senator Joe Thomas Named Honorary Chairman Senator Joe Thomas was recently named honorary chairman for Big Brother/Big Sisters Second Annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake. Jay Gaskins Big Brother/Big Sisters of the Lower Neuse will hold their second annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake on Saturday, Feb. 18, at B & R Bowling Lanes in New Bern from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Senator Joe Thomas will kick off the event by bowling the first ball. Lee Moore will be the Master of Ceremonies for the event. Bowling teams, made up of civic organizations, youth bowlers, league bowlers, business persons, and individual citizens will obtain . sponsors to raise money for BB/BS. The goal for 1984 is $12-14,000. Bowlers and sponsors will be eligible for prizes throughout the day. Proceeds from this event will be used to obtain additional personnel to further Thatches between Big Brothers/Big Sisters and youngsters in the area. Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Lower Neuse is a private, non-profit organization serving boys and girls, age 6- 18, from single-parent families in Craven and Pamlico Counties, through one-on-one friendship and recreation with caring adults, age 18-70. With over 160 volunteers giving leadership and support, matches are made with professional selection, supervision, and support. Thtey currently have 26 active matches with 67 children and 29 adults on the waiting list. For more information, call 638-6888.
